History Iman Selection began at WHPK in 1995, as a fill in for the long running Friday afternoon reggae show called Radio Babylon. After spending time doing a weekly show, Benja left Chicago in spring of '97 to live in South Africa. During his time there, he was on the air at Radio CKI (Transkei radio) and on The Voice of Soweto. In the summer of 1999, Benja returned to Chicago and began what has become a regular biweekly show on WHPK. In the beginning, the show sought to simply showcase qualty music. The shows began to have more thematic focus over time as the underlying collection became larger and more organized. Recently, the show has had more focused topics, exploring a variety of artists, producers, groups and styles of reggae as a foundation to build a mix. For each show, versions and offshoots from the theme are explored as an excuse to run riddims. With little chat to cloud the mix, the sounds get to open up and speak for themselves. Most of the shows are mixed completely live in the studio, so you get to hear the mix as it develops. Your Host: DJ Benja DJ Benja got his start in radio at the age of 15 when he began DJing at WKLM 95.3 FM in the small town of Millersburg, OH. After several years there, he moved to Chicago and hooked up with WHPK. Promotional materials can be sent to: DJ Benja @ Iman Selection |
